I remember watching Jimmy Valvano's speech live in 1993 at The ESPYS. I was a crying mess then and to this day, every time it airs, I cry. A lot. Every year when they award the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance at The ESPYS, I cry again.
The continued recognition of those who have fought the unimaginable to not just survive, but in often cases THRIVE, is worthy of more than an award. Their lives provide perspective for whatever I may be going through at any moment, and motivation to give more to myself and my goals, as well as my community.
In a virtual presentation last night, this year's award went to Former Minneapolis North football player and current RB for Mesabi Range College Taquarius Wair. Wair suffered severe burns at the age of four in a fire that also took the life of his sister. He was given a 20% chance of survival and lost some of his fingers.
Taquarius "TQ" Wair was surprised by his favorite NFL player who then surprised him with the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance.
I have shared his video from The ESPYS last night and you can watch his story from SC Featured here
Congratulations, TQ! May this be a blip on the radar of your incredible life.
